INTRODUCTION

***Identification of Benzoyl Salicylic Acid as a Novel Signal for Systemic Acquired Resistance in Plants

In this study, I identified and characterized benzoyl salicylic acid (BzSA) from the seed coats of Givotia rottleriformis, a tree species belonging to the Euphorbiaceous family. BZSA induced systemic acquired resistance (SAR) against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) higher than salicylic acid (SA), a plant hormone and well-known SAR inducer, and acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). Pretreatment induced more defense-responsive pathogenesis-related (RP) genes than SA and ASA. The biosynthetic intermediates of BzSA, such as cinnamic acid (CA), benzaldehyde (BD), benzoic acid (BA), and SA, were purified using an open silica column and preparative HPLC and identified by using GCMS, NMR and HR-MS analysis. BzSA and its analogs were chemically synthesized, and interestingly, pretreatment with BzSA derivatives offered better protection against TMV than BzSA and induced SAR and PR genes more than BzSA. Therefore, we conclude that BzSA and its analogs are potential SAR inducers against viruses.
