Studies on mechanical properties of Al base nanocomposite [ ]

Mechanically alloyed Al50Ti40Si10 nanocrystalline alloy powder was consolidated by Hot isostatic pressing in the range 300-600oC with a pressure of 1.2 GPa. Phase and microstructural evolution at appropriate stages of mechanical alloying/blending and sintered compact was monitored by X-ray diffraction and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Alloy sintered at 500oC recorded an excellent combination of high hardness (8.61 GPa) compressive strength (1212 MPa), shear strength (600 MPa) and Young’s modulus (149 GPa).
