High bandwidth in information and communication technologies are commanding new challenges to future network. The management of these networks has also become difficult. Traditional approaches for manual configuration of devices are cumbersome and error-prone. The emergence of software defined networking has become one of the most promising solutions for future network. SDN offers centralized control, reduced complexity and decrease in capital and operational costs. In this paper we provide an overview of SDN, architecture underlying SDN, and also explore SDN with an emphasis on benefits, future trends and challenges that must be overcome to move forward.
