APPROXIMATE ANALYSIS OF PILED RAFT[ ]

Piled raft foundations provide an economical foundation option for circumstances where the performance of the raft alone does not satisfy the design requirements. Under these situations, the addition of a limited number of piles may improve the ultimate load capacity, the settlement and differential settlement performance, and the required thickness of the raft. An approximate method of analysis has been performed to estimate the settlement and load distribution of large piled raft foundation. In this method the raft is modelled as a thin plate and the pile and soils are treated as interactive springs. Both the resistance of the piles as well as raft base are incorporated into the model.

Interrelation of Dynamic Response and Geometry of Short Steel Chimneys[ ]

Steel stacks are smoke releasing slender structures constructed in various industries. They are subjected to static and dynamic loadings. Dynamic analysis is carried out by considering both seismic loading and dynamic wind loadings. Apparently dynamic wind effects are critical for steel stacks and they govern the stability conditions. Steel stacks being slender and long sections they are more prone to dynamic wind oscillations and corresponding stresses. Present study deals with interrelation of geometrical configuration and obtained dynamic response of short self-supported steel stacks under dynamic wind loadings and seismic loadings. 42 steel stack configurations for 7 different heights of stacks are selected and analyzed for dynamic wind loadings and seismic loadings as per Indian standards (IS:6533 part2)and IS 1893(part 4). a relation between dynamic response and governing geometry of the stack is found out. Use of excel sheets and STAAD-proV8i software is done for analysis.

EFFECTIVENESS OF MIND SCHEDULING AND GROUP SCHEDULING IN OPTIMISATION[ ]

The example of best machine in universe is human mind. Human mind follows all the instructions given accurately. Hence there is correlation between human mind and scheduling. Scheduling helps for proper channelization of problems. Actually arrangement of steps can be done in two ways- sequencing and scheduling. There are various techniques which plays an important role in foundation of mind scheduling of learner. First we have to select the actual step which is important in starting of the work and then following the next steps in proper order for completion of the work in minimum time. Schedule gives us the idea of our planned work or task and how much time will required for its completion. By using the various methods of traditional education and philosophy we can set the mind of learner in such a way that he can use these techniques for getting the maximum output. The first part of this paper emphasized on skills of mind scheduling and second part includes the scheduling of grouping of jobs to get maximum output.

SEISMIC ANALYSIS OF FRAME TUBE STRUCTURE[ ]

The Frame tube structure is analysed .The frame tube structure take more of lateral load The efficiency of this system is derived from the great number of rigid joints acting along the periphery, creating a large tube. Exterior tube carries all the lateral loading .Structurally, the framed-tube is superior to a rigid frame because it places material on the exterior of the building. The entire interior structural system is secondary - designed to carry only gravity loads to the ground level. The tube buildings leave the interior floor plan relatively free of core bracing and heavy columns, enhancing the net usable floor area .The reduction of material makes the buildings economically much more efficient. These new designs opened an economic door for contractors, engineers, architects. This study is focused on seismic behaviour of tube structure for varying zones in India for the parameters like displacement, story drift, and time period

Analysis and design of two span continuous prestressed beam[ ]

This paper discusses, analysis and design of medium span continuous beams of prestressed concrete, effects of prestressing continuous beams, its advantages and disadvantages and how to make cable profile concordant. For continuous post-tensioned girders, the analysis and research work are comparatively lesser than segmental girders. Apparently construction of continues girders seems to be difficult but it is more efficient for heavy construction practices as in continuous girders curved cables can be suitably positioned to resist span and support moments and there is a reduction in the number of anchorages in continuous beams as compared to simply supported beams. In this paper, two spans continuous prestressed beam of uniformly distributed load is design and analysed. The cable profile and stresses developed at support and span sections is presented in the results. Finally conclusions from the results are presented.

Analysis of Ground Clay Brick as Supplementary Cementitious Material[ ]

Present work evaluates performance of binder composed with partial replacement of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) using ground clay bricks (GCB) used in building construction. The replacement level of OPC with GCB is kept as 5%, 15% and 35%. The results demonstrate that addition of GCB do not produce any detrimental effect on performance of the binder in terms of normal consistency (NC), setting time and soundness. The compressive strength of the binder is reducing with increasing replacement of OPC with GCB at all ages. The reduction in 28-D compressive strength is not very significant upto 15% cement replacement level, but is significant at 35% cement replacement level compared to OPC and fly ash based binders. Gain of strength from 28 to 56 days for all the GCB based binders is higher than that of OPC and fly ash based binders indicating good pozzolanic activity of GCB. Based on the results of the study we can conclude that ground clay bricks can be used as supplementary cementitious material.

The research work and development of composites and advanced ceramics has a variety of manufacturing challenges. Also it is wellknown that many of these materials cannot be effectively machined by conventional machining methods. Apart from huge investments and economy concern, the process selection is based on the machined surface integrity. The high pressure waterjet with abrasive additives known as abrasive water jet (AWJ) can be used as an alternative to conventional processing and has been suggested for use in post mold shaping of composites and other hand to cut materials very effectively. The research works on abrasive water jet cutting is discussed in this paper. Omni directional cutting potential as well as minimal thermal and mechanical loading are few advantages. Composite materials are widely used in various applications like space, aircraft, marine, architectural and automobile sector because of their superior physical, chemical and mechanical properties even though they are a little bit expensive.

Design of a Prestressed Concrete Stress Ribbon Bridge[ ]

A Stress Ribbon Bridge is a tension structure, which has similar geometry to that of a simple suspension bridge. This type of bridge is mainly used for pedestrian or cycling traffic. It is a slender structure, in which the suspended cables are embedded in the slab deck, following a catenary arc between the supports. The system is then prestressed using another set of tensioning cables to provide flexural rigidity to the structure. This paper deals with the static behavior of stress ribbon bridges. The structural governing equations are studied and presented. The equations are then integrated for a particular case of a single span bridge, accounting for various loading conditions and prestressing forces. An example of the application is shown based on the presented formulation.

EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF SELF HEALING CONCRETE BY CEMENTATIOUS MATERIAL[ ]

The aim of this study is to develop smart concrete capable of self-healing as a method for crack control and enhanced service life of the concrete structure. This concept is one of the maintenance-free methods which, apart from saving direct costs for maintenance and repair reduce the indirect costs a saving generally welcomed by contractors. The application of sodium silicate solution as self -healing agent was investigated in this paper. This system involves a sodium silicate solution stored in glass tube present in the concrete matrix. Point loading was carried out to form a crack on the specimen at the age of 28 days. As tip of the tube got fractured due to the load, result in releasing the sodium silicate. Non- destructive test was conducted to quantify the healing process inside the cube and surface crack width was measured. It was observed that the concrete have shown positive result in regarding the healing of cracks formed in the cube.

Use of vermiculite for light weight floating concrete[ ]

The research paper deals with the study of vermiculite as a replacement of conventional aggregate and its use as a light weight concrete. The tests were conducted as per Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specification codes to evaluate the suitability of the vermiculite for structural and non-structural application by partial replacement of up to 25% of cement. The cement-vermiculite samples failed to meet the required strength for structural applications. The strength and other properties met the Bureau of Indian Standards for non-structural materials such as flooring tiles, solid and pavement blocks, and bricks. Detailed leachability and economic feasibility studies need to be carried out as the next step of research.

Cost Comparison of Modular Construction with Ordinary Site Construction[ ]

The advent of the 19th century brought about the industrial revolution in which the manufacturing process was streamlined. This novel process severely cut down the time taken for construction and reduced the inherent defects in the finished products. But, why hasn’t this industrial revolution impacted the construction industry? In India, we still continue to construct buildings just like the pre-historic man did albeit with better materials and techniques. The underlying reason is the said “higher cost” of these factory made products over ordinary site erection. Modular construction (factory made products) has many advantageous such as speed of construction, higher factor of safety, higher design loads, reduction in labour required and no haphazard construction practices. We aim to offset these advantageous as costs and thus comment on the viability of modular construction in India.
